View Full Version : Can I see pictures of your wall-hanging plane tills?

So my recycled kitchen cabinet is absolutely stuffed and covered with planes, chisels, saws, spokeshaves, etc. It is making it hard to find anything and tools are getting dinged up. It's time to build something to hold them. I've searched and see quite a few plane tills, but could I ask for some more pictures here? I really need ideas. I cannot find one that seems like it would quite fit my needs. I am especially looking for ideas about utilizing the insides of the doors for storage.

Thanks.

Me too. I need to build a storage area for my planes and other tools.

I would show mine, but I had second thoughts while building it.

The biggest problem is to have a place not just for planes, but all the other tools it needs to stow. Of course, there is always an endless list of tools we might want to acquire in the future. Then comes the problem of where will any tool storage cabinet we build be stowed.

In the mean time, I did a search on plane tills to find links to the many threads we have been treated to in the past.

Derek Cohen started out showing us his saw till and a few posts down shows some more of his great work:

This is just a start of what came up in a search.

A lot of inspiration for the wide eyed woodworker wanting to stow some tools.

Good Grief. Is that ever out of date! Try here (but it is still nothing special - now Sean's is really nice): http://www.inthewoodshop.com/Furniture/MyWorkshop.html

Holy crap Derek! I just soaked the front of my shirt with drool looking through that page. Very nice setup. It would be a joy to walk into that shop every day.

Thanks, Derek. I was hoping "that guy from Oz" would chime in.

Here's some shots of the one I built for myself. Used rare earth magnets mortised into the ramp for keeping the planes from falling out.

My only complaint with it is that it has become too small for my ever growing plane collecting addiction.

Here is mine. It is small, but if I take out the dividers and replace them with .5 in ones rather than the 1" one I used, I gain room for another 2.5 in wide plane. My plow and router planes don't fit, cause it is too shallow. It could easily be made larger. Sorry about the lousy picture.

Very nice examples here and good god Derek. That is one heck of shop you have created for yourself and the cabinets are all stunning. Lots of time and $ wrapped up in storage solutions for your beautiful tools. That is the way it should be IMO. Nice work to all and thanks for so great inspirations for my growing collection of fine tools.

Is there enough steel in the knob or tote screws for a magnet to hold those bronze bodied planes?

You cant see it in the pictures since you'd need a close up, but the bronze planes are actually held in with a small cleat that engages the first 1/4" of the toe of the plane.

The magnets do grip on the knob screws, but I didnt feel comfortable holding them that way. Would have been a shame to see my LNs all busted up on the floor so i figured I'd rather be safe than sorry.
