I stole, err borrowed this design from AAW member Art Ransom. http://turningaround.org/
I called him last night and thanked him for making his site and I have to say that he was more then happy to help and volunteer info. A very nice person. I'm sure I'll be picking his brain some more in the very near future. As you can see from his site he has a wealth of knowledge. I'm going to be adding ballast boxes on the lathe as well as the extension before I dive in on the first porch post. I live in Cape May NJ and it has an abundance of Victorian homes as well as a very strict historical society and have been getting requests to duplicate some porch Post as well as newel posts. This should to do the trick at 13' capacity. I also made a steady rest with some left over material and my daughters old Rollerblades. Total investment including paint was $170. That sure beats $1800. buying 2 50" extensions for less capacity!:D I'll make sure to post the first go around in detail. Thanks for read guys!

You might consider another steady for that length. I tried a 8' post on a friends 9' bed and the vibration of a roughing gouge in the middle of a 4 x 4 pine post was considerable. Beautiful job and the monster site is top notch.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to experiment this weekend turning a couple of columns for an arbor my wife has been asking for. Most likely it will be stave construction joined with birdsmouth joints like Art Ransom does. Right on Doug. I've been making quite a few concrete counter tops. It's really a lot of fun except for the lifting to install part. As far as the paint I took the tool rest to the local Ace hardware and had them scan it for color. They got pretty close.

Kurt, not sure how you are going to chuck these large pieces, i have just bought a revolving center chuck adapter so i can use faceplate on headstock and faceplate on tailstock

look in craft supplies spring/summer 2010 issue on page 49
under oneway revolving center look at (C) 130-2222 1 1/4"-8tpi adapter

it fits my 1642 jet revolving center so i believe it will fit the powermatic

Yes Tony it is 1/2". I did have concerns that the tailstock would'nt lock down because the lathe itself is 9/16" but it holds just fine.

thanks Kurt I have so 1/2 flat stock that I was going to use for and extenstion what was worried about the tail stock and banjo tightening down I gues I had better get welding since Im now out of excuses
