It's good to have friends

A friend of mine runs a sawmill and he recently ran across a gnarly chunk of maple as he was processing lumber for flooring. He thought it looked 'interesting', knew I was just getting started in woodturning, and wanted to see what I would do with it.

This is what came out. I built the matching pen for him as a finders gift .. and as encouragement to keep on the lookout for other 'interesting' pieces in the future.
