So what do you think about the "new" as in current model not old iron, kinda made in the US, Oliver 10" #4240 jointer. I am planning on getting a 10-12" non-combo jointer and investigating my options farther from the "norm". I have been around the old arn version but not the new ones, will get it with a Byrd head if I go this route.

TIA

I had so many 12" boards, that I sold the one I had to a neighbor and got a Go 609 12" from Grizzly. Would have liked to go 16" but they are pricey. Got the Byrd head for the Griz. Had to take off the infeed table to put it in, as they will only install their insert head.

Another old American name bought by the Chinese. Probably o.k.,but not the very heavy duty machines the original made.

I believe the machine is made in Asia, then Baldor motors are installed when they land.

I have a 12" Jointer and run into times when I wish it where a 16" .. Most common size of lumber I buy is 2x8 and 2x10.. so while 10" is awesome.. it really depends on the types of boards you get.

I just got a load of Wenge.. The whole thing arrived 1x12 and 2x12.. one board is 2x14..

It would be nice to be able to run wide stuff in one pass, but I fairly often face-planed stock wider than 12" on my 12" Northfield by flipping end for end after each pass. So, yeah, double the work, but the job got done safely and accurately with the equipment I had.
