Well I started out the day making a Pen which I don’t do to much anymore unless a friend requests one but I had a blank that I bought as it looked very interesting. The blank was labeled “Buckeye Burl” and it looked as though it was epoxy stabilized. I have not tried one of these so I though I would give it a go. Sure did stink while turning!

Then I decided to make a box a bit larger than normal out of a piece of Texas Ebony I had picked up. This piece was completely covered with a very thick dark layer of wax but I have done quite a bit of Texas Ebony in the past. I could see a bit of light areas through the wax but I figured I would lose them once I started shaping.

When I got it on the lathe and roughed down I found this!

Well I have never seen a piece like this before and it was absolutely beautiful! I threaten to go ahead and put finish on it just like it was but the wife said no. So I had to rethink what I had planed to see if I could take advantage of this awesome piece of wood. This is what I came up with.

Texas Ebony with Blackwood and Lemonwood Finial front view;

And another view at an angle to show more of the grain with less camera flash;

Comments and suggestions welcome and thanks for looking.
