Here's another one, thanks to a wood trade from fellow creeker Bert Solis. Spalted Alder, a beautiful piece of wood.

Beautiful piece of wood indeed. But aren't you going to ask what people see in this one? I see a goat man! I see ET! I see Casper! Stop... HEEELLP! Oh no, wait... I see Jabba the Hut with no head...

Really nice, Cathy! That may be the first piece of spalted alder I recall seeing. It certainly makes a very attractive bowl. I like the rounded rim with the band - nice touch.

David is fishing for a date. :p:D

Nice looking bowl Cathy. I agree, that's a beautiful piece of wood for sure.

I see ET too!

That is a cutie, Cathy. The spalting is fabulous. I have not been able to find much spalted stuff yet, except occasional spalting just under the bark in the new wood. Do we suppose that impatience has anything to do with it?

Hi Cathy. I've been watching your progress as a new turner. This last bowl is very nice. You are improving, by leaps & bounds

Cathy,
That's a very nice looking piece of spalted alder, and good functional shape to the rim. I see it as very easy to hold, and would work outstanding for pistachio shells. I really think you should just send that one to me...hey, I have to try.

Very well done. Is that just an oil finish, details on finish?

Nice job on the bowl Cathy. Spalted Alder is one of my all time favorites.

Thanks to all. Sorry David, I'm not dating anybody with this one! ;)

Finish is several coats of shellac to firm up a couple of punky spots, and then lots of "tung oil" (formby's low-gloss). The wood soaked up everything I gave it for quite a while, even with the shellac. I haven't buffed it yet.

And it's going to be a birthday present for my stepmother. Maybe she'll put pistachios in it! (hope she doesn't read this:))

Too bad . . . that's a nice looking girl in the bottom.

Nice bowl, too.

Nicely done. That is really pretty wood, and I like the soft transitions at the rim and base.
