Has anyone here made or seen a low profile dust collector?
I'd like to build a new outfeed table for my cabinet saw and it'd be great if I could house my dust collector completely underneath. I'm perfectly willing to take it apart and fab new parts to get it under the table.

I can live with more frequent emptying if I have to. I'm thinking that if I use a 4X4 foot area it'd still hold a lot of chips and dust even if its not very deep.

Any thoughts on this?

Well, there are horizontal-bag collectors like http://www.pennstateind.com/store/DC3-1M.html

Grizzly makes one like this, and I think Craftsman too.

A drawback to these systems is that all the collected dust acts to reduce the filter area, which reduces the cfm. You'd probably do well to put a Thein-style separator in your system to catch a lot of the dust before it gets to the filter.

Thanks, I'd not seen one like you show.

IF you are going to go that route, you might be better off with a 2HP blower, to a pleated filter, pulling through a Thien separator in a 20 gallon trash can. I have a Shop Vac / Thien trash can separator under the wing of my Table saw for sanders and such, I would think you could rig up a blower ducted to a filter in place of the shop vac pretty easy....

The above link is probably what you are looking for. The 2 hp unit is only 32 inches high. They are made in Canada so like anything else made in North America they have a premium price attached.
The company that manufacturers them caters to industry.

Thanks everyone!

That Kramer S2L looks like what I want.
Now to figure out how to reconfigure my old vertical unit.

If anyone has something to add please do so.

perhaps the cheapest route is the 900 CFM mini blower from HF. Then put a thein separator in front of it... on sale for $70 on the website right now...

You'll regret buying that machine, it's a wound rotor motor, 112dB.....Your neighbours will need earmuffs:D
