well this post leans heavily towards the realm of OT, but it involves some turning content. anyways this weekend is my 4th consecutive MS 150 ride, one of my favorite weekends of the year that involves other spinny things.

after looking at the forecast for the weekend it calls for highs in the mid 50's and rain all day on Saturday(the first 75 miles) and the same for the second day. I figured that i better get around to installing the fenders on the bike I've been building for the past year or so. last night i put the finishing touches on it and I ended up turning some fender spacers out of some scrap mahogany! it is a nice cap on the perfect (for me)bike. I'm going to turn some flame maple bar plugs when i get some more time, and perhaps a bud vase. Anyways here are some pics, nothing fancy on the woodturning front, but it's a utility piece. finished with some beeswax, and mineral oil.

the light tan bits are actually leather washers to dampen vibration, these fenders don't clang about when you hit a pothole(thanks to the leather and mahogany).

Anyways, wish me luck, I'm riding for my good friend lance. He's a great friend that has MS. He will be riding a bike that I helped him put together.

Very cool and inventive.

I bet those pieces will make you go faster too. :)

...sorta like PF Flyers. ;)

um...most of you guys don't know what those are, do you?

hehe,
They Look Like Chuck Taylors (another fav of mine), they don't look that fast though :)

Thanks for the compliments!

A bit of background on the bike:
while it may not exactly look like a performance race machine, it's a bike built for performance over a long distance, self supported endurance rides specifically. It's calssifed as a randonnuring Bicycle, randonnees typically go from 200Km to 1200Km, you complete a series of timed check points but they're not races, you either finish or you don't. all of the equipment is made with durability and weight in mind, I hope to ride a few of the shorter events next year(200-400Km).

John-I know all about PF Flyers and Converse AllStars also. Patrick -Very nice job on the bike. After 150 miles think about how good it will feel to stand and turn for awhile:D

Patrick, it's a classy bike. Well done on the spacers, and I hope your ride goes well, for both, you and your friend.
I love biking!! Had Peugeot bikes since '69... 10 speed racer, and now 18 speed Orient Express Mountain Bike..
Hmmm.... wonder what I could turn for my bike..... :D

This is great. I have always wondered how I can incorporate turning and road biking. Very creative, maybe we have the start of a sub-forum. In Vermont the weather is getting better and you have to 'make hay when the sun shines' so I am now spending a lot more time riding and less time (if any) in the shop turning. But it all changes in a few months again.:)

Nicely done! Good luck on the ride, and thanks for the idea...I'll be doing a 163mi Pan Mass Challenge route in early august and hadn't thought to get some fenders rigged up to the bike...I might should look into that :-/

thanks everybody, the ride went great!
the fenders came in really handy on the first day of riding, everyone got a good soaking, but the fender's kept my bike protected from sand and it stayed remarkably clean, the bike was just a champ, I got going over 30 mph on some descents and it was an extremely stable ride, no rattles whatsoever. I got a lot of compliments on the whole setup, one of the mechanics at the ride invited me to come to their shop's tent to drink beer with the other bike mechanics, hehe.

here's a pic of me finishing the ride:

It was quite a ride.
