This is the first large item tuned from a black walnut score my Dad gave me. He pulled the trunk and most of the tap root out of the ground with a tractor and the tap root had grown sideways. Loads of swirls and knots. Took forever to finish and I cant say that I am completely done as I can see a few small sanding swirls after the lacquer was shot.... darn dark wood! Anyway, sanded to 400 (sort of), Blo and a couple coats of rattle can lacquer. Its about 12 1/2" dia and about 5" tall.

C & C welcome as usual. Thanks

Oh and mama has already claimed this one!

Very pretty wood Scott. I like the bowl. I'd like to see some shots pulled back a bit so it is fully in focus...but these close-ups sure show off the figure and color! :)

Gnarly walnut! Doesn't get much better! Very nice, and I hope you have more of that left.

I like the bowl and it's nice that you left some natural edge to it. Makes for a little more challenge sometimes finishing/sanding, but end product has an earthier feel, and a nice natural shape to it.
Cool! PM me if you need an address to send any remaining wood to.:D

Great piece. Roots have some of the most interesting grain of all.

I love that dark wood. You did a great job capturing the wildness of the wood.

Nicely done. I like the natural edge a lot. I would have guessed the piece was smaller had you not listed the size... I'm not sure why. Very nice looking wood.

Thanks all. I will try to take a less "close up" picture. I got a new macro lens and although it takes good up close shots, it tends to blur everything not in the focus point. I will place a pop can in the shot for perspective as well.
