made this for my wife for Mother's Day i am new to turning (got lathe and started turning pens about a month before i made this bowl)

Ambrosia Maple , Mylands sand sealer then sanded to 600 grit then Abranet pads to 12000 , finish is Behlens Turners Finish (works great on pens not quite as well on bowls :rolleyes: )

Great first bowl, wow! I'm struggling with the beginning-bowlturning thing right now.:o A question -- what tool(s) did you use when turning the inside bottom and that transition area between the side and the bottom? I've had some trouble when doing a steep/deep shape like your bowl.

Jamie;
almost all of this bowl was turned using a Hunter round carbide tipped tool
on the inside i experimented a bit with a custom ground Crown tool my uncle has (no idea what you would call it ) and a plain old gouge
went back to the Hunter because it just cuts better especially after i figured out the technique :D and found the sweet spot

the shape on the outside was entirely done with the Hunter

sorry i can't really describe what i did any better but to be honest i went purely by feel as far as what to do with the tool, by eyeball for the form and by touch for the finish

Thanks, Don. I have the Sorby multi-tip, probably would do the same thing. Just haven't gotten it out and learned how to use it yet.

Congratulations, Don!! Nice work! Looks like you did something to darken the edge of the rim?

What are the dimensions of your bowl?

Jamie,
The transition area is best cut in my opinion by use of a tool with a secondary bevel. You can use a scraper, or carbide cutter...but hard to beat a well applied bowl gouge riding the small short bevel all the way through that area. Takes practice, but will improve your form too. Take a look at the video in this ad for tools by Craft Supplies... this is just one example of doing this...most turners I've come across use some variation of this for similar cuts to avoid the heel of the gouge from leaving a 'crush line' in the wood. http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Turning_Tools___Signature_Tools___Mike_Mahoney___M ike_Mahoney_The_Cleaner_Tool___mahoney_cleaner#vid eo

Don, that is a real cutie. The wood is handsome, and the form looks functional. I'll bet mom cooed over it. That's what is going to keep you going to the shop. And then, after a few more bowls, she'll start telling you the truth :)

That's a nice first bowl Don! You sure picked a hard form to start off with but managed to pull it off quite well!

Looking forward to seeing bowl #2!

thanks for the comments guys

John;

Looks like you did something to darken the edge of the rim?

What are the dimensions of your bowl?

bowl is approx. 5" diameter across the top , 3 and 1/4" tall and the base is

2 and 5/8" flaring up to about 3 and 1/8"

as for the rim....... i originally had a very sharpedge there and decided that it needed to be tamed a bit and quickly learned about "design opportunities" previously unsuspected to be available hehe
i accidently burned a spot on that edge sanding it and then inspiration struck and i did rest of the rim edge on purpose , burned 3-4 holes in the quadruple layered sandpaper i was using while i was at it

interestingly enough there were a couple of places on the rim that just did NOT want to cooperate and burn therefore the black stripe around the rim is stylishly ????? wavy???? not sure how to describe it but its thinner in some spots than others and its due to the wood my guess is the harder spots are the ones that were stubborn about turning black hehe
