Hi all,

I'm fairly new to this forum but quite impressed with the wealth of information available here. Let me first start off by telling you that you guy's are costing me alot of money:eek: ;) ,PC sander broke now the proud owner of a festool 150/5,needed a plane and read the threads about the la block plane and now waiting on shipment of a Lie Neilson la block plane. Have to admit I much like John as all my tools have batteries or cords. But now my question I was looking thru some stuff I had of my dad's and ran across a Sargent (only # I could find 414 ) and a Stanley 220 any info would be apreiciated uses, age, ect.

Brad, I'd love to share my wealth of information regarding those planes, but it would be the blind leading the blind!

What I can do is give you a "Welcome" to SMC, the world of Festool and now, the Dark Side! :D I'm a relative newbie to WW and even more so to the world of Neanders, but willing to learn. In this case, I'm a prime example of the old saying, "Education costs money!" Hang in there...I'm sure one of our more astute hand tool users will jump on with the info for you. Being Thanksgiving and all, they may take a while to get over here. Neanders are generally really BIG on the wine thing, you know. (Makes me sleepy!) Oh, and before I forget, I don't remember seeing pics of the Festool gloat! Dang it, where are those picture cops when you need them?! :)

Hi Brad,

Welcome to the Creek.

Yep, it sounds like you are on your way to tool snobery! ;)

http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0.htm

This will take you to the Superior Tool Works, Blood and Gore page. It is a great reference for Stanley planes.

Can't help you with the Sargent.

It has been said the bitterness of poor quality last long after the sweetness of a low price has passed.

A Sargent 414 would be a Jack Plane - comparable to a Stanley/Bailey #5. They sold for about $2.70 in 1911 (http://www.roseantiquetools.com/imagelib/sitebuilder/misc/show_image.html?linkedwidth=actual&linkpath=http://roseantiquetools.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/sgt8.JPG&target=tlx_new&title=Sargent%20Adjustable%20Iron%20planes). Nice planes, IMO.

A Stanley 220 would be a pretty standard block plane without an adjustable mouth. I've got one myself, it's a great little workhorse of a plane, but not anything special... still a good one to have around the shop.

Take a look at this page (http://www.cianperez.com/Wood/WoodDocs/Wood_How_To/INDEX_How_To.htm) for some great links to other sites about hand tools, and pay special attention to the Superior Tool Works page mentioned above, as well as these:
