Maybe this will help someone, at least I hope so.

I thought I would take some pictures as I made a square bowl. This is a piece of walnut 11 1/2" square and about 1 3/4" thick. Pay no attention to the mess in the background, I have no idea how it got that way. LOL

I used a worm wood screw (yes, I know they only rate them up to 10"). A key for me is to make the piece VERY square and get the hole in the middle. Here is the piece mounted.

I used the 50mm jaws.

Recess done and a small recess for my logo. Pencil line denotes where I want to edge of the base to be.

The bottom finished and sanded.

The piece turned around and ready to do the inside.

The inside roughing done and sanded though the initial grits.

Using the Cole jaws to remove the recess.

The finished piece. AO and buffed.

nice bowl...

I am trying to make one where the corners corve over enough to be the legs and what supports the bowl... I have gotten close but the legs have gone flying each time...

That's why they call them winged bowls. :D

Toney, this is a great post! Thanks for sharing your work with us; the step by step is wonderful. I have a couple short pieces of thick cherry that are leftovers that I might have to give this a try with.

Thanks for posting the tutorial. Do you sand that while it is turning and if so doesn't it hurt!!?

I do power sand with the lathe spinning out to the wings and then I sand the wings by hand with the power off. This bowl was 11 1/2" square so basically I power sanded an 11 1/2" circle and hand sanded the rest.

If that makes any sense! :D

Toney, I have always wanted to make a bowl like the second one you posted with the four 'legs'. It will happen someday. I attempted it once and ended up with something similar to the first bowl you created this demo for. The problem is that I used a piece of kiln dried ash, which is a very open grained wood. It was a difficult wood and just did not work well. The thin legs just splintered. I think that if you use something with a tighter grain it is a easier to cut.

Good job and thank you for the tutorial.
