Probably has been previously posted but here goes. Was cutting some dovetails today and as usual, was struggling to start my rip saw with the cuts. Past practice with saws has been to start the cuts by drawing the saw back. Found that with my rip saw that starting with a push cut, works much better. Only took till I was 64 to find that out.

I always use my marking knife to cut a notch on the waste side of the line at the top to start my dovetail saw exactly where I want it. FWIW

Don't wait to make one. You can emulate Harry's technique with a chisel.

I just file down the fist couple of teeth on my saw to a point where they don't catch but the make a deep enough groove to effortlessly start the cut.
