Finally got some time on our schools lathe today. Lot's a kids learning and I've lost a lot of time. What can ya do.

Before I get to the maple, the tools we have at the school are short for the types of things I turn. So, I took the first 85 minutes to turn a walnut handle that could handle larger pieces.

Didn't measure it, but guessing around 18-22 inches. Loving it!

Now onto the maple. When it's completed I'll share the whole story, but for now: The tree this came from came down just so I could get the burl:eek: But the rest of the maple was sent to the mill to make some lumber.

Currently around 12 inches, 5-6 inches deep, and not even close to done. Didn't have any anchorseal at school so it had to come home. Oh yeah, its natural edge.

Hopefully it'll be done by next Thursday.

In looking at the handle you made for the tool, I noticed that the chisel certainly looks like a spindle roughing gouge. I hope you are not going to use that for roughing out a bowl. The tang on the end of the gouge will not handle the stress of hitting the end grain on the blank and will eventually bend or break. It should only be used for turning stock with the grain parallel to the lathe bed.

If it isn't a spindle roughing gouge, then--never mind. ;-)

I agree with Joe.
That looks like an accident waiting to happen.

Aside from the valid concerns on the gouge, you are doing a great job on the bowl, and some beautiful wood!

Nice handle, too!

Are you going to turn that to finish width green? If so, what is the wall thickness going to be. Also I understand burls are prone to cracking, so how will you deal with that. I look forward to seeing the finished product.
