My first turning in months. My first "art form" ever. And very nearly my first funnel.

Tazmanian Eucalyptus 5-1/2" x 1-7/8", 3/16" thick everywhere except the center of the foot which got down to 1/64". 2 coats of Deft semi-gloss rattle-can lacquer.

Comments, critiques, suggestions for improvement happily accepted!

ps sorry about the bad photos: point 'n shoot while the finish was drying.

Wow - what a great looking bowl! Never seen anything like it! You should be happy with this one! Glad you stopped before completing the funnel!

Nice work!!!

Greg,

That is a way cool piece of wood and form. Nice.

Funny you should mention funnel. I have a funnel to be sitting on my lathe this very moment!!

This is nice looking. Glad you did stop when you did. As I have not stoped in time. Like they say it is only firewood. Darn I do not have a fire place.

Very nice bowl. Glad you avoided carpal funnel syndrome.

Greg, that is a fantastic looking piece! I love that wood - great character with the voids and the grain. The contrast between the dark areas around the voids with the lighter color really sets it off.

Very nice bowl. Glad you avoided carpal funnel syndrome. Now, that was funny!!!:D

I don't know about the funnel since it looks more like a sieve to start with. Great looking piece. It must have taken a delicate touch for a lot of the final cuts and finish work.

It does, doesn't it. That's funny!

On one of the other forums I frequent someone posted the rules of bowl turning for me and I thought I would share them because I really liked them and plan to post them over my lathe.

Rules for Turning Bowls

#1: Make sure the inside diameter remains smaller than the outside diameter.
Otherwise you end up with a plate.

#2: Make sure the depth remains shallower than the height.
Otherwise you end up with a bracelet.

Happy Turning all!

The ugliest wood always makes the best bowls!

Looks like it was burned in the Vortex!:)

Looks like it was burned in the Vortex!:)

I envision it as being shredded by the Tazmanian Devil swirling around it as he chases Bugs Bunny through the forest. :D

I really wish I did! But that was the only piece like it I had. But if you like the gaps and all, I've seen lots of RedGum turning blocks that look like that.

Karl, I just contacted Nolan Harris who provided the wood. He says he has a bunch more of it. If you are interested his email is nolan@harrisburlsupply.com. He has a website but it is pretty limited showing mostly his pen blanks. But I know he has the following in "whole burl caps" and/or bowl blanks:

Brown Mallee Burl
Red Mallee Burl
New Mallee Burl
Red Gum Burl
Tazmanian Eucalyptus Burl (what this bowl was made from)

He also is the premier importer for Bethlehem Olive Wood pen blanks.

I hope this helps out.
