I've been wanting to get into segmented turnings for some time and finally took the time to set up fixtures etc. This is my first one and uses 7 rings of 24 segments each. I made it out of an old oak book case that I had around. There are still some problems with gaps, but it appears to be sanding and gluing techniques as opposed to fixuring and jigs. I'm working on 32 segment fixturing after which I will get serious about various woods and adding interest. There's a lot to learn.

Good looking bowl. Just curious - how long did it take from turning your first bowl to wanting/doing a segmented one?

That's a great looking bowl. I think the oak almost gives it a look of a basket weave. Great job!

Carl - very nice work on the bowl - especially considering it was your first segmented! Looking forward to seeing your next one!

If that's your first one you have done very well, looks very good to me. If you haven't already, get Malcolm Tibbets book.

Very nice first try Carl. Nice form & finish. If you can pull this off on a first try, you'll be producing amazing stuff in the near future. Good Work!

Looks great for a first. What saw are you using -- Table saw or Miter Saw? A 32 pieces segment is a 5.625 degree angle, whereas a 30 piece is an even 6 degree and a 36 piece is an even 5 degree. I find it easier to set my sled at the even degrees.

Good job, keep at it.

That is a great looking bowl.
After creating/finishing my first segmented bowl recently, i have a brand new appreciation for all the great segmented bowl turners on this forum.

Well done! and that's your first you say. Well on your way to greatness:). Oak is not the easiest to work with yet you've done a very good job. The joints look as though there may be some burning due to sanding, I had the same problem when I first started. I found that sliding the segment across the sanding disk help.

Wanting to - almost from day 1. Actually doing it - about 10 years. Hey, I procrastinate. Thanks for your comments.

I think you may be right Mike. I did burn some. The sanding disk was getting old and I was not cleaning it well.

Nice job, Carl. I have to ask, why start with so many segments per ring?

Great work, Carl! I wonder if the gluelines would show less with a different adhesive? What glue did you use?

First or not that is a fine piece Carl.

Nice job, Carl. I like the look of the oak, but I'm a little disturbed that you've resorted to cutting up your furniture for turning wood:eek::D

I'm using an old Craftsman saw that was made in 1946 that I have tuned up. It a small saw (table is about 14x24), but it is all cast iron and weighs a lot (these old muscles don't like to lift it). I made my jig using AutoCad and plotting angles I wanted. It's pretty easy to get the angles exact. I like the idea about using integer angles. There is no particular reason to select the number of segments that I did.

I figured that when I start adding more detail, I would need more segments to get better resolution on interest rings. Now that you asked the question, I'll have to rethink that - just hadn't considered anything but starting with 24.

Carl,

I think that is a very nice piece. I agree with Steve, the oak gives it a wonderful woven look.

Nice job on your first segemented piece. I have been making segment pieces for about 4 months now and I am hooked. Looking forwarded to your next... Just don't take as long as the first to do..... :)
