Here are two firsts.

Segmented bowl - made from walnut and maple. Measurements 9"Wx5"h

Off center turning - The spatula was fun to make.

Not sure if i will be making these again but always fun to try something different.

thanks for looking,
jim

REALLY good looking pieces, especially for a first try! Impressive stuff!
Any particular reason you don't know if you'll try it again?

the segmented turning is very time consuming. i am more for immediate gratification -- taking a log and making a bowl all within a hour or so.

I like your spatula. That is one of those "how did he do it" turnings.
Your bowl is nice, but the bottom is almost certain to separate due to the way it is constructed. I hope that it stays together for you though.

Jim - I like the color contrast in the woods used in your bowl. Nice form - good looking joinery. The spatula is interesting and sure to spark a lot of conversations!

Very nice for a first try. Caution, segmented turning can become adictive.

This is exactly my feelings on segmenting. I really enjoy looking at what others do, but with all the flatwork projects I should be doing I would rather put that joinery effort into a piece of furniture. I know it has its own allure, but I haven't felt that tug yet.

But, alas, I think the only way I am going to get a piece of furniture made is sell my lathe!! And, I doubt that is going to happen!:D

That is a nice "first" piece. I hope it won't be your last..... Don't be a quitter.
