I am planning to turn some offering baskets for our church and was wondering if anyone here had ever done any. Kinda wanted an idea on shape and size. They will be segmented and made out of walnut. David

David I made 3 communion plates for the church here. They ranged in size from 8" to 12" and about 2 to 2 1/2" deep. Not sure if that is what you are wanting.

And what should I finish this with? They will be handled a good bit. Maybe laquer? David

The Fall 2002 issue of the American Woodturner has a good article on turning collection plates by Wes Jones. If you are an AAW member go to the members only area and look at the downloadable articles. Select the sort by author and you will find Wes' article.

I don't think lacquer would be good choice for a collection basket. I would use Minwax Polyurethane.

I have to ask something, wouldnt poly turn yellow after awhile? As a newbie I have to ask how walnut oil would hold up and also how it would look.!!>>..

I have not used any other lacquer than deft and it is not the waterborne type but it advertises that finger prints etc will not show up, with that in mind what are the negatives behind using lacquer? is it too soft or???
What would the drawback of say using a furniture finish? I see some of them that advertise to be rock hard when cured?

Dont take this as a "i am testing your intelligience" I am just asking cause I need to know.

thanks
