Here is another from my chunk of walnut. This hollow form is about 8 1/2" tall and finished with AO. First time doing this shape, although it is pretty much the other shape just upside down.:D

Mark, I like this one - not as much as the carved vase, but I like it! Wonder what it would look like with the bottom textured band lower - such that no walnut showed around the bottom? Might not work, but just a thought.

John,

Good observation, my first thought was to go all the way to the bottom. I will have to try another and ring the bottom.

Mark - I happen to think that the way you have the black banding on the form works as is. The exposed walnut at the bottom of the form helps tie everything together. Without that small section of walnut - the form loses balance. Just my opinion.

Nice work - looking forward to seeing what else you come up with!

I like this one a lot. The color of the textured areas looks nice with the walnut. I also like that the detailed areas are very cleanly separated from the natural areas. Nice work.

Your stippling work is very well proportioned to the piece and the black offsets the walnut's color nicely. Great piece.

Steve,

Thanks for the quick Photoshop (or do you use Gimp?) crop. I think you might be right. The added walnut band does add balance. The piece mimics the great staved pieces the segment guys do. I guess I was going for an "iron strap" look on this piece. I think that it would also work with 6 segments instead of four.

Mark that is a pretty piece. I like the balance of the walnut to the textured.

Mark - lost my copy of Photoshop when I replaced my computer in January and have been looking for another graphics program to fill in some of the features that I really like. Just came across Paint.NET - which has a lot of the same features as Photoshop and have been working through the program. So far - feels like I have been using it for years!

Check it out - it is free: http://www.getpaint.net/features.html

Paint.NET is awesome. It is nowhere near as powerful as Photoshop or Gimp but that's OK. It has all the features that 97% of users need and is much easier to learn to use.

Since it uses .NET, there is no Mac version, however.

Steve, never thought of doing a crop to see what it looks like. I still kind of like the edited version, but would have to ponder the comparison a bit.

Much easier than turning another piece!!:D

Very beautiful. Gives it a kind of metal strapped look w/o the metal or the bulk. Wonderful execution.

Nice job on this piece Mark. It does give it a metal strap look, goes great with the walnut.

Mark, Very wonderful shape and the accent bands are right for the piece! Just another thing I need time to try!

Thanks for sharing,

Jeff

Nice piece. I agree with Steve, the walnut at the bottom does tie the piece together.
