 Hello the few, the proud, those peruzing the Neander Cave.
I have a MF no. 5010 brace with permaloid handles, but i'm a little confused as to whether it's a Parsons De Luxe.
I went to the authoritative source (oldtoolheaven.com) and i'm still in the same spot...please help! Heres what I know about it
: my brace does have the Leland universal jaws. It is numbered 5010 (not A or C). It was made before 1957, unlike the type with
the economy jaws. It has Permaloid pad with the embedded MF logo.
OK, that being said, now for the tricky stuff. The handle is beautiful and made of permaloid, whats different is the color...
it's clear, yellow, and deep red. At first i thought maybe the inside was always that way and someone wore or sanded through the red layer.
This theory was shot down when i picked one up that had the handle cut/pryed off...horrifying! My guess is that it's an error in
casting...the color didn't mix correctly...hmmmm...the pad is beautifully red.
Next, the racthet has the large screw showing...so according to my interpretation of the MF source, it's not a fully boxed ratchet. This makes
absolutely no sense. Is this a transitional brace that just hasn't yet been discovered. aside from this, everything is the same.
Someone please help me wrap my brain around this. No matter what I come up with, it's still a gorgeous brace. I will post pictures later.
Thanks for your time

I was under the impression that Permaloid was clear by default. Stanley made butt chisels with yellow (http://www.goantiques.com/scripts/images,id,1876765.html) Permaloid handles. Stanloid (http://www.swingleydev.com/archive/get.php?message_id=5863&submit_thread=1#message) must be the dumbest word ever invented.

It is quite possible that your brace handle was just made from a badly mixed batch.
