I finally cut into the Burl my friend gave me awhile back. I'm still not sure what it is but its nice looking in person!

The striker is made from Persimmon

No help with identifiying the burl, but what material is the friction/scratch surface? Is it brown colored slate?

Ken, I can't help with the ID, but I can surely attest to the beauty of the burl!! Very nice, and nice work on the call and striker.

Pretty stuff... Looks like maple burl to me, but I could be a number of things. Nice work.

My guess would be Cherry burl. I made a pen from cherry burl and it had the same look and design. Do you have any bark from the burl left?

Ken, that's a beauty. Are you pleased with the sound? I aks because I've made a couple from burl and thought they sounded slightly on the "soft" side. Does this beauty have a sound board? If so, what's that like?

Very nice looking call and I like the photo, too.

Terry its has alot of volume or can be run soft with the Carbon striker.

Its a 3 1/2 Sla-tek top with a 2 3/4 glass soundboard, I usually use a soundboard thats only 1/4 inch smaller then the top but was recommended to use this size with this top. The glass is 1/16th (slightly more) below the top as well.

Donny, I dont think it's cherry, doesnt smell or feel like it and its much lighter then most cherry burl ive seen.

Looks like madrone burl to me. One of my favorite woods to turn.

Here is a Hawk call made from Persimmon. I used the same Teak/Tung Oil sanded in then used an Amber Shellac follwed by a Spar dip. I would imagine it could be duplicated on a bowl but with alot more effort!

Those look great, Ken. It could be madrone burl as Wally said... If it is, it should have a wonderful, sweet scent. It smells like cotton candy to me.
