Will be receiving some freshly cut walnut, in two logs, tomorrow. A friend went to Pennsylvania to visit his folks, and they cut a tree down (he says 10" to 12" in diameter); it's in the back of his pick-up, just outside of DC on it's way here. Will post pics soon!

Mike, sounds like a good gloat. I have a ton of walnut around that diameter and find that it turns beautifully. I can't wait to see what you and the students plan on turning from it.

A "pre-gloat"..... is that just a way of hyping up our excitement level prior to seeing photographic proof!?!?!:D;)

Congrats, Mike - you just can't do much better than walnut!

Will be receiving some freshly cut walnut...

Here's the photographic evidence - one log is about 10" in diameter, the other 12" - 4.5 to 5 feet long. Can't wait to get it cut up & anchorsealed!

Well, for sure you have moved from "pre-gloat" to an official GLOAT! Nice haul, Mike.

I see some natural edges and purple fingers in your future. Great stuff to turn.

Unfortunately, even though I anchorsealed and protected from direct light...the end grain started checking a bit, and I cut most down to smaller lengths If you can, keep them long as long as you can if you want to do some end grain work...nice for logs that size.

I really enjoyed turning end grain down the pith to make vessels with them...but had a dickens of a time with a natural edge left in tact. Lots of CA and patience to put the bark back after things dried.

here's one done with maple accents (nice way to deal with the getting rid of the pith!)...

WTG Mile. There looks to be a lot of heart wood there. Seems like all the Walnut I bring home is half sapwood. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Bill, I wish it had more sapwood, to be honest; would have liked some contrast! Right now I'm still cutting it up with my new chainsaw, and it's taking alot of effort. I'll be turning a couple green, and putting the rest away for the future.
