I recently acquired a small supply of incredibly rare Huon pine burl. Huon pines only grow in a remote part of Tasmania and can live for over a thousand years. This stock was harvested from a naturally-fallen tree. It is very oily and has an amazing smell when turning it. Huon pine has become one of my favorite woods and I feel very privileged to turn it.

Anyway, here's the pen I made today -- Huon pine burl with African blackwood accents. Black titanium plating:

Thanks for looking!

Joe, that is a beautiful combination!! Alby Hall, a well known turner that I believe was originally from Tasmania, has done some beautiful turnings with this wood - very unique appearance.

You made good use of it here!

John,

I never heard of Alby Hall, but I looked him up and he makes some incredible turnings. Here's a link to some picture of his work:

I love the little eyes in the pine and the blackwwod really offs the creamy color of the pine. It is great for you to get access to some very special wood and make a wonderful pen out of it. And yes you do have the photo stuff figured out.

Thanks for sharing,

Jeff

Very nice pen Joe. Have no experience with Huon but it is definitely interesting wood. Also I am particularly fond of Black Titanium.

Beautiful pen! Did it make you nervous working with a wood that rare? I like the eyes and your fit and finish is perfect!
