My wife was recently working on a project that required threaded inserts in the ends of dowels. I came up with a setup to accurately drill the dowels for the insert. I clamped the benchtop drill press to the workbench and rotated the head 90 degrees. I drilled a hole through a piece of scrap that fit the dowel. Place the dowel in the hole and line up the bit with the center of the dowel. I then adjusted the location of the drill press so that I could clamp the dowel in the bench vise. I started with a forstner bit to drill a slight recess for the shoulder on the insert. The hole for the insert was then drilled with a regular bit. For any dowels that were slightly smaller than the hole in the jig, I used masking tape for a snug fit. Screw in the insert, and you are done.
