11 1/2" x 10 1/4" to the top of the finial. AO finish and not buffed yet.

First inside out finial for me, actually the first inside out turning of any kind. I turned a small piece of blackwood and mounted it inside. The tip of the spear is also blackwood.

First time that I textured anything. WOW, I am really going out on the ledge!! :D

All comments and criticism welcomed. If you don't like something, let's hear it (or I guess see it) and tell me why.

Wow, great looking piece, especially the finial for me is a winner, it goes well with the design of the lid.

Very cool Toney!
I've been experimenting with chatter work and my finial skills are coming right along HOWEVER I've just got to know where I can find info on how to turn that style finial! Any tips?

Thanks,

Tony - very cool! I like the combination of contemporary form and ogee curve!

Excellent finial! I really like the basic form of the finial. The inside/out portion adds a certain WOW factor to the piece! Nice touch!

Not sure about the texturing - but that is just personal preference. Can't help but wonder if it detracts from/or competes with the finial by creating another focal point of interest.

Nice work Toney! Very imaginative!

I guess I agree with Steve - the piece is fantastic ....

but the texturing is a little too busy for me.

Easy to say, when I didn't do the work! Still, looks great!!!!

Nicely done.

Great choices on the wood, too....

Toney,

I like it!

Using inside-out turning and turning a finial. Ingenious! Well done Toney!

Mike,

Check out this site for an inside-out turning of a Christmas ornament by Creeker Larry Marley..... http://marleyturned.com/Video_Inside-Out-Ornament.html

Another one to watch with a little instruction:

Very cool finial, and I like the form overall. I'm not sure about the texturing... I wonder if a little v groove or bead to define the textured area and frame it might enhance the piece. Overall, it's a very creative piece.

Toney, I think you really stepped out on this one! Very different, and I LOVE the finial - just an excellent emphasis for this piece. As I mentioned to you, since someone commented on the "inside out" turning, I have wanted to do a finial like that! Glad you did one first!

Always a good combination with maple and walnut, and the blackwood is a natural for the accent.

An the form, I have done a couple of pieces with a similar shape - it is intriguing and I keep wanting to come back to it.

Nice job Toney. I like it all both as individual aspects and as a whole. One idea, and I'm not sure I'd do it as good as this piece looks, but I'd consider darkening the texturing to echo the blackwood. Before I attempted it on the piece, I would DEFINITELY do a photo study as it probably would not be reversible.

Thom,

LOL. It is amusing that you mentioned darkening the texture because I tried to do just that on the first base I turned (which unfortunately was a nicer piece of wood that this one).

I was not as smart as you with the photo analysis and just dove into burning it with a propane torch. I set the lathe to rotate slowly and had at it. WELL, after it was darkened, I stopped the lathe and you would not believe (or maybe you would) the cracks that had opened up. Obviously I had gotten it to hot. That piece ended up on the burn pile!!!

So after turning this one, I thought about using a electric wood burner BUT was too chicken.

Thanks for the nice comments.

A magnificent piece. I got to learn more about inside out turning. Sounds impossible to me.

Really nice piece. The inside-out part makes a great focus of interest. I was going "wait, how did he do that?" until I figured it out. It would really throw non-turners. I may be in the minority, but I like the texturing. I think it adds the right amount of randomness to an otherwise very formal look. I think this reflects the playful quality that you obviously had when making it. Nice work.

Very well done. The colors, the form and the inside out finial make it very eyecatching!

I guess I forgot to post the picture that shows the blackwood accent inside the finial. It is kind of hard to make out since it is in the shadows. Here it is.

Beautiful piece Toney. Yes, John, that is the type of thing I was referring to in adding an inside out technigue.

Toney, this piece has all kinds of cool things going on in it. That finial is exceptional. But I'm not sure if I lake all the features combined on one piece. Can't really explain other than it seems to have so much variety that the features are all fighting for you attention. If that makes sense?

I love that finial!!! I want to make a pair of candlesticks similar to that out of some teak.

You must have ALOT of patience... very nice.. I like the type of texture around the center band but not sure if it does or doesnt go with this particular piece. More than I could do though for sure...
