What would you get, Spyderco Pocket Stone or DMT Credit Card" Diamond Sharpening Cards for honing skews, parting tools etc? Thanks for any suggestions.

I will grind the edge on the slow-speed grinder every now and again, but will use those DMT diamond credit card size things in between grindings to keep an edge on the gouges. But I noticed that the paper with my McNaughten Coring System (I think) said to use the real stones (ceramic or whatever, not diamond) to create a burr on them.

Ted,

Here's the one I've had for 4 years. It works well.

Steve, thanks for your input.

Ken, the one you use is very appealing to me, however, I do not order from CSU unless it is an absolute necessity. One thing that raises my hackles is companies that charge exorbitant shipping charges, which have been my experience with CSU. They wanted $16.00 for shipping on an order that, at most would cost $6.00. I got the same products from Hartville Tool with a 15% discount plus free shipping. I will probably go with the diamond hones from Craft Supply, they have free shipping.

BTW, I envy where you live. I spent 2 ½ years at Mountain Home and loved it. Did some hunting around McCall on the Salmon.

I have a DMT 2x6 stone in 600 grit, and 3/4x1.5 in 1200 to hone with. Works well. They are sold by many companies.

The "knoop hardness" of high speed steel can reach a value of 1500-2500. I believe ceramics are generally in the 1000-1500 range. Diamond is between 7000-8000.

I'm no expert here, but one could conclude that if you are using tools made of hss you should hone them with diamond.

I have a progressive set of diamond mini hones, and they do a great job. You can visually see the effect.

Thanks for sharing that information John, sounds reasonable to me.

Ted,
I would look at either the DMT credit card or better yet the DMT 6" dual sided 600 mesh and 1200 mesh stone. The 6 " is what I use and it is soooo nice!!!
