The older I get, the more my jeans carry the "relaxed fit" label, the more back pain I have when I wake up. I vaguely recall reading some endorsements here (or maybe on another forum) about the sleep number beds, but I thought I'd ask again for some thoughts. Will I never wake up with a bad back again? Will I get a better night's sleep? Do I need all the bells and whistles, or is the basic model enough? Will my wife look 15 years younger? ;>) Will I look/feel 15 years younger? Thanks for any responses.

Tony,

I recommend you go try them out. They have lots of stores in malls. There's always some sort of deal there too (discounts/financing). I did just that last weekend.

There are some cool things about them that make the price seem more reasonable. All the parts are replaceable. For example, if your matress gets nasty or rips, you can replace the cover. This wasn't clear from the website. We actually had the salesperson partially disassemble one of the beds. They are actually shipped UPS in a resonable sized box and you assemble the mattress (or you can pay extra for delivery if you live near enough to a store).

Our results were that I only liked the more expensive model 7000 (I liked it a lot). My wife didn't like any of them, so I don't think we'll be getting one.

Based on the recommendations of others, I had almost just ordered the 5000. I'm glad I didn't now.

I used to wake up with lower back pain every morning, we bought one about 5 or 6 years ago, I have not woke up with a sore back since then.

we got one about 10 years ago. It is great! If you over do the back some day just change the setting and you get back support like you wont believe and you will wake up without that nagging back problem carried into the next day.
It is especially good since I sometimes like a softer bed and other times I like it harder and my wife always likes it firmer. The only thing if I could go back would get the model that has the number setting on so I could go back to the same setting. We got the cheaper model. They may all have it on now.

I'm glad to see this conversation...Dr. SWMBO and I are considering moving in that direction as our present mattress has reached the end of its usable life. Owners...keep commenting, good or bad!

Jim,

Here's another system that looks interesting. Can't tell whether the prices are CDN or US as the company is based in Canada.

Hey Ed-
Took a quick look at their website.... looks interesting. Just so you know, I believe that although their prices *look* cdn to me (ie. twice as high as one would expect to see), I think that they are actually US prices, as it says that Florida residents have to pay 6% sales tax. (if it were cdn, it would mention cdn provinces' tax amounts)

Ed, if you take a look at the page about contacting the company, they give a mailing address of Naples Florida. ;)

We have had our Select Comfort for about four years now and love it. My son now has one and loves it as well. Separate controls are just great, not to mention the comfort levels. We bought ours, set it up in the bedroom and I used it to take measurements to build our finished Cherry Bed. Here's how it turned out:

Comfortaire in Greenville, SC makes a similar bed. We have had one since April 04. Very satisfied. Within three days I stopped taking prescription meds for restless leg syndrome. $1199 for king size pillow top. Unless you have money to burn don't spend extra for digital control. When it feels right, it is the right number. We cycle our bed every morning, soft for sleeping and then pump up hard for sitting on side to get dressed.

We have one and really like it. The dual controls are great. We also have the ability to raise the head and feet. We find that we do use it. Reading in bed is easy. I recently had a bad cold/sinus/sore throat, and raising the head a few inches made a world of difference!

Really like ours. If I had to pick between it and the shop--I would have a lot of good "stuff" for sale. It has made that much difference in the way LOML and I feel.

I've been curious about these things. As far as I can tell, it is a fancy air mattress. When I've been around air mattresses, they have one odd and sometimes not-nice characteristic. If you lie down on one, your weight is spread all over, and you sink into the mattress the right amount. However, if you sit on the edge of the bed -- maybe to put your shoes on -- all your weight is in one spot and you sink in a long way. In those air mattresses we had as a kid, you'd collapse the mattress and sit on the bunk. A similar thing happens if you sit up in bed to read. All the weight of your upper body rests in one place on the mattress and you sink in too much.

So are these Select Comfort beds different?

Jamie, they are different...there is a support frame that encloses the whole mattress which is firm enough to sit on. I know that because we just got back from the store and that was one of the things I "tested", both for the reason you cite and um...the impact on certain "recreational" activities.

Oh, and Dr. SWMBO ordered it to replace our very old mattress system in the MBR that is on its last legs. It was between the 5000 and 7000 system and the latter won out on the noticable extra "fluff" in the topper and the memory system. A few bucks off and no-interest financing for 18 mos was icing on the cake. It was about a grand more than replacing with a premium king size regular mattress system, but should have a longer life. Even if it lasts for the same dozen years or so that the Simmons I have owned did...the comfort is outstanding.

Thanks, Ken. Guess I'd have figured it out when I got to the point of being able to blow a couple grand.
