While this isn't totally a neander post, It is for a ( mostly ) Neander tool cabinet build. I got my walnut from a really nice sawmill listed on the ebay. ( YAY ! ) Saved a chunk of money, compared to the padauk and purpleheart and zebra wood I bought at Woodcraft in Jacksonville a few weeks ago. I still need another stick of 4 inch wide purple heart for the bottom drawer face.

Savannah Creekers : Here is where you come in.... I bought this beautiful wood...bought It needs to be joined and planed down a little bit. All of it is 13/16" or 7/8" thick... It needs to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 3/4" .... not exactly that thickness, but all of it needs to be the same thickness. All of it is 57 inches long or less and 4 to 7 inches wide.

So does anybody around the area mind if a perfect stranger comes over and chats woodworking while we mill some lumber ? I have a buddy with a Grizzly drum sander, but I want that as a last resort. A sander is not a jointer or planer...Ya Know ? I offer up great conversation and a twelve pack or maybe twenty bucks for your time? Maybe a trade for some labor or help on a project?

Thank you so much. If your up for it, p.m. me or just post in this thread...:D

All of this is for my tool cabinet as I mentioned... While sketchup skills are not the best, here is a rough draft of the case work.... The exterior is 3/4" walnut and the dividers are 1/2" walnut.

Also as you can see I picked up my Dado stack and a little bit better blade for the TS, along with some HF dividers to do dovetails with.

Still hoping to scrounge up the cash to put my order in to Lee Valley for some skew and detail chisels, along with a DX60 block plane. ( soon, really soon...)

That's some good looking walnut. Is that from a local mill? I've never seen a walnut tree during all my trips to SC!:D;)

How much of the joinery do you plan to do by hand? It sounds as if at least the DTs. What about the dados, etc on the interior. If by hand then exact thickness doesn't really matter, since you'll be marking from the adjoining piece. It really doesn't take that long to take off 1/8 to 1/16 with a coarse set plane. Maybe I'm getting lazy, but I find I like the look of stock a little thicker than 3/4.

I got it from a ebay seller. Just search Walnut lumber. They are out of Indiana ... and the wood is super nice. All of it is 13/16ths or 7/8ths thick...If it was all the same thickness, I would tackle it with the number three and just put in the sweat equity... but I am hoping somebody takes a little pity on me and helps me out with some powered assistance to speed this project along a good bit....

And yes, Dovetails on the four corners of the case... and of course every drawer will have through DT joints... Aspen or poplar sides and backs, most likely birch ply or oak ply 1/4" bottoms ... I figure the two bottom rows will be purple heart fronts, the top two rows will be the padauk fronts , and the three center drawers up top will be zebra wood fronts... but I dont know yet. Not sure If I like the color contrast of the Zebra wood against the paduak. I picked it up just in case I decide to go that route.

The cabinet is sized to fit over the stretchers of my bench. 16 inches deep, 16.25 tall and I think it was right at 35.75 or 36 inch across.... The drawer Heights are ( from the bottom up ) 4" , 3.5" , 3" , 2.5"

The whole thing is set up using the golden ratio as far as the Height and width of each drawer front.

I just cleaned up and got the "Townhouse Woodshop" a bit organized... I forgot my wife had a couple of cheapo cabinets up in the attic... so I de-cluttered the space a bit. The TS and other power tools are still in the storage room for sunny weather back porch woodworking !!!!

well , I found a millworks here in town that will do it for .40 cents a foot. ( two other shops wanted 100.00 and 125.00 to do it... ) I have right at 47 feet of walnut.... Which is way too much.... So I will have him S4S it all at around 3/4 or 5/8 or 11/16 , etc... just as long as it is all the same thickness... From that I will pick out the best boards for glue up for the case. But, I got to wait until Monday for them to do it....

I also have access to a Kreg pocket hole kit so I will add a few screw to each glue seam for a little extra support. I think this will be quicker than dowels, and its easy , and all the screws will be completely hidden in the case, I just gotta order some walnut plugs... but the drawers will all be traditional joinery, nothing but DTs and glue.

Once I get the case assembled, I will then have the same shop mill the extra walnut down to 1/2 inch to do the horizontal and vertical dividers....

So, If all goes as planned , I will be starting on it next week while I am on vacation.

In the meantime I have to make a ZCI and Dado insert for my table saw...so that will be the work for the week...
