Just finished off these 2 The bowl is Silver Maple, the spoon is some other kind of maple. And these are some of the mushrooms I found yesterday :)

Critiques welcome.

Nice work, and I'm totally jealous of the morels! Its rather difficult to tell from the photo; did you turn the hollow of the spoon as well, or is it carved?

Thanks for all the great comments so far. As a beginner it's encouraging to see that I'm doing something almost right ;)

I've been doing a bit of expairimentation with spoons ever since i got my lathe a few weeks ago, this was simply turned as a spindle, then i sawed one side flat, and carved out the bowl, with a palm gouge and a hook knife. it was a bit of a learning curve and i took out a small chunk of my thumb with the hook knife. I recommend wearing a leather glove, or what I've been using is a fish filleting glove on the hand that's holding the piece.

I've contemplated constructing a kind of reverse donut chuck, to hold the spoon for carving the "bowl" on the lathe, but haven't made that time investment yet. actually the palm gouge made pretty quick work of the bowl, first cutting across the grain and then cutting with the grain for my finishing cuts.

next I'm going to do some experimenting with some offset turning for the handle/bowl.

Nice work on the spoon and bowl. Excellent find on the morels... I can almost taste them from here.:D

That is a beautiful combo. Next you'll be turning the mushrooms too. Shouldn't be too hard but you'll need a power carving set-up :) Glad you didn't get too hurt. I hadn't thought about a fish filleting glove, I might pick one up. Thanks for the tip.

My friends went out yesterday and found nearly 30 pounds of morels. Sounded like fun, I may have to get a small pack saw for picking up small burls when I'm out foaraging, I saw several decent ones when I was out the other day.

I also plan on making a few more spoons for mothers day, I'll update this thread when I finish them. Thanks everyone!
