Keeping even the broken pieces of planes can pay off at times. To hold a tote the tail end of a plane is handy and for a knob the front end can be used. Use a file to clean up the edges.

Painting frogs is a bit of a pain since it needs to be painted on both sides. If the frog is a type 10 or later, the screw hole for holding the frog adjusting plate is tapped 12-20 which is the same as the tote bolts.

If the frog is from an earlier plane and you have a few spare parts, you may be able to rig something up that uses a couple of adjusting nuts and shaft to hold the frog up.

Yah, I remembered reading about a Japanese technique for carving frogs, but . . . Japanning frogs is different.
