Here are some pics of a mahogany rocker I finished last week. I used teak as an accent wood. Plans from Hal Taylor. 110 hours to build. A fair amount of that time was spent building jigs.

Before finish.

Mikail, that is one beautiful rocker!! The Hal Taylor plans are very nice, and the mahogany was a great choice - not cheap, but great!:D

Congrats on a job well done!

Wonderfully smooth arcs on the joints. The subtle contrast on the woods is very nice. Since the spindles are laminated, is that 3 layers of mahogany or is there a layer of teak in the middle?

Could you tell us about the finishing process too?

Thanks for the comments guys.

John,

Mahogany is cheap where I live. I paid $2.50 US a Bf for it about 2 years ago. I can get teak for about $3.00 US.

Brian,

Hal recommends sanding to 500 grit and then using abralon pads. He recommends a Deft Danish oil finish but I can't get it locally. I used 2 coats of Cabot's 'Tung Oil Finish'. I still have one more coat to put on and then I plan to rub it down and apply a coat of wax.

Great rocker, Mikail. That wood sure is pretty...and cheap!

I wa in Trinidad for a few days about five years ago. I sure did want to bring some Teak back with me. :)

Cody,

The next time you are coming to Trinidad you can give me a shout. I work in the Refinery. I'll set you up with some nice teak.

Brian,

The back braces are laminated - three layers of mahogany and one layer of teak. The teak is the last layer so it is visible from the back. You probably can't see from the pics, but it matches the plugs and the accent strip in the rockers.

An unabashed ooooh and ahhhh to you sir. Beautiful materials and I love the mirror imaging on the arms. A real looker. Last time I priced teak in my area a couple months ago, it had come down . . . to $22.50 a bf.
