I am only guessing, but I am gonna say 2000. I truly have no idea though so I probably should even post this. :)

OK........the next logical question is which is better?? Do I get a better finish with SW or SP of comparable grit?? Are there pros and cons or are they essentially equal?? Thanks.

Whether to use steelwool or sand paper will depend on what I'm trying to accomplish. If I'm trying to flatten (remove dustnibs and lumps and bumps) I will use sandpaper. The steel wool will round over those things so the finish feels smoother but isn't really flat.
To knock down the sheen or hand rub a satin sheen I will use steel wool.

If you plan on using a water based finish, don't use steel wool. The fibers of steel tend to break off and embed themselves in the pores of some woods. These small bits of steel will turn to black speckles in you water based finish. DAMHIKT.
