That cherry looks really nice. Care to tell us moreabout the project? What's the finish?

It is Cherry.

I used 3 coats of Sam Maloof's Poly/Oil finish, rubbing down the finish with steel wool between coats. The finish is a mixture of BLO, Tung oil and polyurethane.

Here is a link to the finish:

After the first coat it looked blotchy but after the additional coats I am pretty pleased with the results.

This was my first piece of "real" furniture. It took me forever to build because I only work in my shop in the winter and then I mainly just get to work on Saturdays, if I am lucky.

Looks nice Mike. Did you spray the inside "felt" or did you cut a sheet and lay it in?

I took a piece of Velvet and a piece of scrap laminate and wrapped the laminate with the velvet then glued it on the back side.

Then I just layed it in the drawer.

Mike,

You said it was your "first" piece of real furniture. Great work that you can be proud of. You just need more shop time in order to turn out more quality furniture. Thanks for sharing the pictures with us.

1 of my favorites. I like to mix cherry and walnut for the contrast. Super job. So when will you build the matching 1 for the other end of couch? Steve:D

Nice table, Mike. LOML saw the picture and really liked it. She then said "you could make a table like that, couldn't you?" I told her I would need a mortiser and a lot more skill.

Thanks for showing the pictures.

It looks really nice.

My wife and I go back and forth on cherry and QSWO for the Arts & Crafts furniture I make for our home.

Jim, you said

She then said "you could make a table like that, couldn't you?" I told her I would need a mortiser and a lot more skill.

Don't let the lack of a mortiser keep you from making this. I don't have one. If you get the Woodsmith plan, there is a trick for making the mortises that the spindles fit in on each side. And, for the mortises in the legs for the tenons on the side rails, I used my router.

I also don't have a jointer, but I improvised using jigs and tricks I have learned from reading woodworking magazines.

Very Nice job! I made a pair form the same plans as you this past winter. Her is one of them. I also make the sofa table that matches the end tables. We love em
