Bench - Dogholes

I am in the process of building a wookbench. It has been on my list for a number of years. The top will be white ash 2.75 inches thick.
I am planning for 3/4 inch round dog holes. My question is how deep should they be? All the way through?

To use a hold fast, they do need to go all the way through.

I just added bench dog holes on my bench. I reasoned all the way through is better so I won't be cleaning them out all the time. Using home-made dogs out of a 1" steel bar. They were well worth adding.
