View Full Version : Desegmented Bowl?

Instead of gluing segments together, why not remove some segments from a solid bowl? Granted some nice carved leaves would be better if one has the resources (tools and skills) for this.

This 11-1/2" ash-juniper bowl had some major cracks and was destined for the burn pile, so was a good candidate for experimentation. Just something to post, as I haven't shown anything for a while. C & C welcome.

Actually, Richard, that is pretty neat! Reminds me of some of those cigar ashtray turnings.

Well now that sure is different! Pretty cool actually! Nice looking wood and a great way to save it from the burn pile!

Richard,

Did you cut out the segment before or after you turned the bowl ? In either case Ill bet it was more difficult than it appears. I like experiments like this since you never know where they may lead.

Richard, great outcome with a redesign opportunity. Clever.

Oh. You meant a controlled desegmentation. I was expecting some gore:eek:.

Thanks everyone for your comments (especially those who liked it). My wife immediately stuck a "Not 4 Sale" note on it, which could mean "Burn pile" or "I really like it". It actually meant the latter.

Glenn it was a sorta finished bowl, but had major cracks so I didn't even properly sand and finish it. Been sitting at the back of a shelf for a year or more. "Adjusted" a table saw sled to nibble away the offending areas and hand sanded the edges.

That is pretty good idea. I have some roughouts that will probably end up with some major cracks so why not accentuated them!

I definitely like it. Imaginative and much too pretty to burn!

Really..it is pretty cool. I've been looking at it since yesterday....and my first thought was....Make it a game!!

You know....put it into the center of the table....4 players. Then put 3 Red Marbles in there, along with one Black Marble. Ding a dinger, and everyone tries to grab the black one as fast as they can.

'Course then, you'd have to clean up afterwards.

Ok..maybe not. :o

Interesting, i like it
the form reminds me of an open snake mouth with fangs out. would be a good change dish. It would have the subliminal message "leave my change alone or my dish will bite you"
