View Full Version : Circuit/wire size for 5HP, 27A motor?

So I found a pretty good deal on a Grizzly table saw. It's a 12" cabinet saw with a 5hp motor. It's rated at 27amps. This is way more saw than I will ever need but I just couldn't pass it up.

Now, the Grizzly website calls for a 30A circuit for this saw. Is that going to be enough? Or should I use a 40a breaker? The distance from the saw to the panel is going to be about 20ft.

Also, the previous owner had the saw hard wired. Should I go that route or should I use a receptacle and plug?

Thanks!
Doug

If Grizzly says a 30 amp circuit, I'd go with that. You'll need to run 10/2 wire. I'd put a receptacle in so I could use it for other equipment, but that's just me. My welder runs on a 30 amp circuit too.

30A circuit is what you should have.

Thanks guys.

The only bummer is that I figured when I upgraded my table saw, it would be 3hp. Everything I installed was rated for 20a.

I didn't really expect to get a good deal on a 5hp TS....

Thanks !
