I have not seen this thread on other forums, but I like it. Attach is a photo of a box elder crotch and a ash crotch. Not sure what I will use the box elder for but the ash will be bowl bottoms (segmented bowls) or platters.

Randy, that ash is particularly nice!! The box elder is very nice, too, but looks like it could be difficult to maximize with the bark running so deep.

You might consider a winged natural edge bowl for the Box Elder crotch, possibly cutting some off the ends or just rounding the ends if you are comfortable swinging that much air gap. You have a smaller bowl section as such, but an impressive piece. If the bark deep then you can use epoxy and woodchips, and coffee grounds as a filler to save the bottom. Good luck. Looks like some design opportunity to capture the beauty of the wood.

I agree the box elder may be hard to use, I am going to let the half logs dry and see what happens (I made sure to cut the pith out of the log). They didn't cost me anything other than some chainsaw time (good therapy). If nothing else the crotch flame wood may work in a segmented bowl. Or I may fill the bark inclusion and use it for the bottom of a bowl.

Pretty stuff... especially the ash. Looking forward to seeing some finished work.

That is some good looking wood. I would do a winged bowl on one of the two in the first pic's.

Congrats on the wood! I would shoot for a matched winged bowl set out of the Box Elder. Might be tricky but would make for quite the set!

If you just can't decide what to do with that box elder, I'll be happy to rid you of the problem! ;) Some right purdy wood IMO!

Looking forward to what ya come up with!

Yeah, I'd definitely be turning some winged bowls out of the box elder right now if I were you.

I have turned a lot of things, but don't know what a winged bowl is. Can someone post a photo? I am always up to try something new with the lather.

Thanks

Randy, I have never done one, but I did do a search and these are a couple of pics just for reference. These were from an earlier thread and turned by Rich Boehlke.
