I visit another forum that is about t-shirt and garment decoration. A very popular thing right now is the application of rhinestones to garments. There has been a discussion there about making templates for the application of them with a laser. I volunteered to check and see if anyone was close to by to Surprise Az that might have interest in making some templates for him. Anyone?

I am located in Mesa, AZ (less than 1 hour away). ANy more details on the size or prefered material for the template?

I'm not close to Surprise, but I am curious about what one of these templates looks like. Are they supposed to hold the rhinestones in place and lift off after use or do you mark through them with a marker to show what goes where? Do you have a picture of one?

thanks, dee

Yes, the idea is to make a template in the shape of the design. The template is made to the size of the stones being used. Most people are making them with a plotter and using 25mil Hartco sandblast mask. We can't laser that material because of the pvc in it. However, there alternatives like oilboard. Here is a link to a commercial system that sells software, cutters etc. You'll get the idea. http://www.rhinestonesystem.com/

Here is a standalone software program to make the patterns http://www.winpcsign2010.com/ This is actually a cutting program but it will print to the engraver. Download the demo to evaluate. It costs about $200 for the full version. (You can do it in Corel but it's pretty tough)

The hardest part is getting all those ellipses spaced properly

This is a youtube video using a GCC Laser to cut templates for rhinestones.

We are using oilboard purchased from ULINE for the templates.

Larry,

Steve was telling you to read the thread a little more slowly... ;) Directly under the link to the video Jerry posted "We are using oilboard purchased from ULINE for the templates", so that answers your question...

Don't worry, we all have off days :-p

Dan,
No, it says that, I agree and I read that for sure. However, it is unclear to me if that is actually oil board that was cut in this video. Since I don't know who Jerry Hewett is, nor if he has an affiliation with GCC (who apparently made the video) I stand by my question. No question Jerry Hewitt uses oilboard, but does GCC in this video? Simple
Edit: Had I looked at the video a bit closer, it states the material to be cardboard. Oilboard and cardboard aren't necessarily the same, as the oilboard that Uline sells is .015 thick. The material shown appears to be a good bit thicker..maybe not..thus the question still stands.

Winpcsign2010 is one of the most popular softwares out there..... They have a demo you can try out.....

Myself I use Coreldraw, and can design in rhinestone patterns....

Your right, WinpcSign2010 is cool. I can also design in Corel, but man not as easy as this software makes it. WinpcSign will also print registration marks on designs and I saw a video that showed a Redsail Plotter that could be used to contour cut WITHOUT an optical eye feature using the WinpcSign to output to it. Other plotters may be able to do that also.
