Makita 18v Batteries

Is it possible to use the larger (3.0ah - Model BL1830) 18v batteries to work in the drill drivers that come with the smaller 1.5ah (Model BL 1815) batteries? If so, are modifications necessary?

The smaller batteries work fine, but I want a third battery and can't locate the smaller batteries locally.

I have both size batteries at work and we regularly interchange them. I grab whatever is charged, only difference is run time and cost.
