Started as 3, but one warped so badly it couldn't be used. Don't have a clue as to the wood, but it was very wet when I got it at the dump, and each warped excessively while drying. Kinda heavy and dense, but turned nicely. Larger is about 7"x2.5", the smaller is about 6"x1.75" or so. 2 wheel buffed, renaissance waxed.

Mike,
they look real good,I like the dark brown,?spalted area.Too bad it didn't go all the way around.Looks like some hickory I turned a while back.Big one would look good as a center piece.

Nice looking bowls. I love the contrast between the colors, and the nice, dark spalt line separating the two areas.

those are pretty,
I'm curious if a consensus develops on the wood type.

The cream color in those look like Maple to me. Nice bowls.

I would guess apple, based on color, turnability, and the warpage. Apple does have a sweet aroma that would be hard to miss though.

changed my mind looking at it again. Dogwood.

Good looking bowls Mike :)

As for the wood, I'd suggest Applewood, for both the overall look and absence of spalting lines like you would get with Maple, Hickory would give you more grain in my experience, but that would be my second guess :)

Personally, I like warped bowls. These look like maple to me. If the tree is rotting, and the brown part looks like it is starting, maple can smell very sour. Fresh sound maple smells kind of yeasty. Apple has a smell all its own, but not really like apples to me. The white wood in apple tends to go orange as it oxidizes.

Sure is some pretty wood Mike! Not all that experiencing in identifying wood but sure reminds me of some Apple I've turned.
