Trying to build my own double handle clamps. Has anyone the Sept 05 issue of Am Woodworker?
Thx!
PS. Im gonna use a metal screw on this one. Wood just for the clamps themselves.

I do not have the article you are talking about.

There have been a few threads on making wooden clamps.

Jorgensen and others have sold kits to make your own. They are not much of a savings over buying the whole clamp.

Making clamps with metal threads has a few problems if you can not tap your own threads since one of the screws needs left and right hand threads.

You CAN get by with just right hand threads if you make the clamps like the old time wooden screwed clamps, except use metal screws. They just won't let the jaws get much out of parallel. The greatest percentage of the time,I use mine for parallel clamping anyway.

Use decent size threaded rod to keep the screw that puts the pressure on from buckling. I'd use 1/2". Those threaded rods are made of crummy steel.

Modern machinist's clamps are the same way, too, just miniature.

Cam clamps are good, too. i've made about 4 dozen for myself. 2 dozen in the 60's,and 2 dozen more of improved ones in the 80's.

The cam clamps cannot clamp as hard as screw action types,of course. I was using mine to glue up guitar tops and backs to the sides,in their molds.

Mr. Wilson, I'd like to see pictures of your cam clamps. I'm working on two right now. They work but already I can see how they could be improved.
