Turned this as a baby gift for some friends of mine. Have a couple more to turn in the next couple months as well. It's not an original idea, I had one as a kid and loved it so it seemed like a great excuse to turn some and get some practice in. Going to make them all a bit different. This one is East Indian Rosewood.

edit: it's a night light I forgot to put that in here originally, the bulb is just an LED bulb, nothing fancy.

It's cool looking. Where do you get the guts for the light? I'm assuming that you glue the top on, so that the child can't eat the light.

I'm not quite sure what it does. Is it a light as David said, change colors or ???

guts are just a replacement socket I found at the hardware store. I've found a few different styles. Not sure what exactly it is for, but it already had the cord and switch attached. You can get little ceramic sockets too but I couldn't find those on short notice.

No its not glued on but its a tight fit, really you keep it up out of reach like you would any other lamp I suppose. My daughter is 3 now and she has mine from when I was a kid, it survived me :D

Next one I make I'll snap some pictures of the "guts" before I put them in.

Not its just an LED bulb. It's just a regular old night light.

I stuck an LED bulb in there just for the heck of it, figured it would burn cooler and more efficient.

I got it now... I thought this was something for the child to play with. I didn't notice the cord in the photo. Thanks.

Can't tell for sure what it is from the picture, but might want to consider that some folks have allergies to woods in the rosewood family. Just a thought.

Yeah I'm tired and left out that important info when I posted it.

I clarified the original post.

Would allergies be an issue for something that sits?

Dave, Should not be a problem. I first thought this might be an item the child would handle and possibly chew on a bit.

Nice work, Dave. A side pic may help get an idea of the form, but looks like you have done a nice job with this.

That reminds me, I need to make some bases! I bought some of those insulators specifically for this project, but just haven't done it yet. Maybe this weekend.

Great looking light!!

Okay, that is really cool. I have some old insulators and didn't know what to do with them. Thanks for the idea.

Kind of funny, I flew out Friday to pick up a new to me car and drive it back and it was within an hour of these friends so I brought this with me, I ran it through security at the airport and they weren't too busy so it sparked a conversation with the guy running the xray. "Hey is that one of those old phone line things in there?" :D I bet they have a long interesting line of things they see.
