View Full Version : Would anyone be willing to help me with adware?

Hi,

I am running Windows 95 on my machines (3). Most adware/spyware removers will not run on Win95. Spybot does, but only removes a few programs. I am overrun with adware stuff that has become really a problem. I think my Mom downloaded a game while visiting and created havoc with my system. :(

Lavasoft Ad-Aware is the second most recommended program for dealing with this stuff. They also do not install under Win95, but on their forum it is stated that they will work once installed! If someone/anyone (is the desperation coming through?) could install the free adware program from them and then send me the files from their directory to "roseguns@aol.com" I would be so appreciative that I might even kiss your feet. Probably not quite that, but close. ;) I am really desperate. I normally backup from our business to our home. This stuff has gotten so bad that I am not doing that out of fear of "exposure".

I have been trying to create a link for 15 minutes. For some reason this isn't working. If you don't have problems with adware/spyware you probably don't need to read this. If you have the program installed, and wouldn't mind sending me the files in your Lavasoft folder I would be most appreciative.

Thanks more than you know,

David

Hi David. I would be happy to help you out but I'm not sure how exactly to e-mail the files to you. I tried but couldn't do it. Why can't you install on 95?

Do you know what you are infected with? What are the symptoms.

Go to this page maybe you can find something you can download.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

You should definately get Spyware Blaster. It gets the nasties before they get installed.

also Hijackthis is a good program but it takes a little bit o' know how to use it effectively.

You can also try this

Good luck

James,

After downloading the program, I get one small message box from the install program then nothing. Lavasoft says this is normal for unsupported OS, of which Win95 is one.

For sure I have "Elite bar, IE Host, SEP, and WildArcade". All these show in "Add/Remove" programs. There are others too that I have IDed. I have at least two other IE toolbar adware programs. There are likely others that I have missed by manual search. One symptom is an IE box that pops up and causes me to lose the past few keystrokes, at which time I have to use the mouse to relocate the postition for the next keystroke. Typing this, I had to go back to the mouse probably 45 or 50 times. It makes posting pretty strenuous.

Yeah, I've been on the Major Geeks site as well as others. A couple of the adware site malicious programs that I've got are not recommended to be removed manually as they are so intense. And that is my only hope at this point other than Ad-Aware and what SpyBot gets. This computer might handle a later OS but my others won't for sure.

Programs to stop this garbage are fine, but I have to clean them out before that will help. I plan on setting up a hardware firewall with a router after I get back in shape.

I'll check the other sites you mentioned. Thanks for posting them.

Just "selecting" and then sending the files as an attachment should work. But it may take more than one attachment to get them all.

Thanks

David

David

I have started using the Mozilla Firefox browser and it seems to be very effective in filtering out adware/spyware.

Try it at http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Edit: Looks like the miniumum system is Win 98.

I think that this may be helpful

http://www.brothersoft.com/Utilities_Security_BPS_Spyware_and_Adware_Remover_ 3705.html

Click download 1 and install then goto

http://www.crackway.com/cracks/get.php?id=1026817

save to desktop.open folder, click Keygen and extract all files. goto extracted files, click on keygen and there is the registration information, I hope.

This software is supposed to work for win95.

Good luck.

James, thanks a lot! I got the files, and they worked after unzipping. Sometimes I get a hang up on "deleting". But a few times at least it ran all the way through. With SpyBot, AdAware, and RegClean and McAfee (with all the latest updates) I have managed to delete hundreds of Viruses/spyware/adware files and registry entries. I also did some manual deleting and Add/Remove program removal. Each time I thought I had something eliminated I rebooted.

After working much of last night and a lot of today, by 11PM tonight I thought I was making headway. All seemed to be removed. I went in to stick a bag of popcorn in the nuker to celebrate and wife yells "something is happening!". Would you believe that something was downloading from a web site??? Cancelling nor closing the programs seemed to effect it. Pushing the computer's "off" button wouldn't shut it down. Would you believe I had to turn it off at the UPS to shut down???

I nor the software seem to be able to find the installer program for a bunch of this garbage. No telling where this sucker is hidden.

Thanks for doing what you could. I'll keep messing with it but I seem to have a real mess.

David

Thanks, James. I haven't read anything good or bad about brothersoft and I'm getting desperate. So I'm downloading it now.

Sorry to hear you still are having troubles.

Did you happen to notice what website you are downloading from?

Have you tried Hijack This yet? and the Cexx forum. I think that they can pretty much fix anything. Also spyware info. forum.

go here for hijack this and cwshredder

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Look under official downloads section.
And the Help forums in the menu on the left..

Personally I would save any important files that you want to keep, format the hard drive and reinstall the OS. Then get a good firewall(zonealarm) and antivirus(Mcafee) to keep out the nasty spyware and viruses.

I gotta go with this one. At some point, you have to bite the bullet and move on. Spend some time on reinstalling or keep chasing these things, especially in Win95, which wasn't the most user friendly of the Windows clan.
