View Full Version : How do I retighten the blade in a backsaw?

This week I bought a brass-backed dovetail saw on ebay. I can pull the blade out of the folded brass back using my hands.
The question: How to I make this right? Do I pound the brass? Or squeeze it in a (soft jaws) vice? Or should I take the blade out, tighten up the slit in the brass and put the blade back in? This last one seems like the more likely, since that's probably how the saw was assembled in the first place.
Finally, can somebody point me to a reference on constructing a back saw?
Thanks for the help.

Remove the blade, carefully squeeze the back's slit a little smaller than the blade. Use a wooden jawed vise so as to not scar the brass. Re-insert the blade. If the blade doesn't want to go back in without shearing off some brass, carefully grind a little bevel on each top edge of the blade, then insert it.
