Greetings all

It has been some time since I posted a picture on the forum here, and this is my first since the new turning forum opened up. This bowl is also the first thing I did once I got back in the shop after injuring my hand on the drill press a few weeks ago.

This trumpet shaped bowl was turned from a piece of cherry burl given to me by Alan Turner, who oddly enough, is not a turner. ;) I was visiting him some time ago, and after a very nice dinner, he took me out to his wood stash and handed me this large cherry burl, asking me what I would do with it. I immediately saw two winged bowls. Since he also has a very nice bandsaw, he proceeded to cut the thing right down the middle for me, making life a little easier. This bowl is the first effort from the smaller half.

Turning this piece was exciting to put it mildly. It is 17" from tip to tip, and only about 6" wide. I spun it at about 1000 rpm or so to keep the open space in front of the gouge to a minumum. If it had gone any faster, I think Big Blue would have taken off down the runway! It is 3/16" thick throughout. It is finished with Watco Danish Oil, and if you look closely, you will see that it don't hold soup. There was, of course, a lot of hand sanding involved on this piece.

Thanks for taking a look.

Bill, you have to stop posting stuff like this. I might be tempted to turn MY little Jet 1236 into an airplane. I really like that trumpet-like shape, though, and mixed with the natural edge of the wood makes this an excellent piece. I hope you get some substantial coin for it (if that's what you intend to do with it).

I am afraid to consider how badly I would have been injured attempting to turn that beautiful piece!

Hi Bill,

Another great bowl.

Jason I dont know if it will take off but it would definately buck down the run way. Have you added anything to help with the vibration while roughing stock out?

Bill, this is a very nice piece...it's a bit more "rustic" looking than that two in the other thread due to the softness of the contour of the bowl itself, and works really well with this chunk of wood. Excellent!

You should bring some of these on a Tuesday night just to mess with some heads ;) :D

Just a mere 300lbs. of play sand in bags on a shelf clamped to the leg stretchers. Bad part is, I'm about to rearrange the ol' shop (and clean the filthy hole), so that I can open the door and have most of the shavings fly that-a-way, instead of all over the shop. Because of work obligations, the messy shop, some tools getting stolen, a minor flood, etc., I haven't really been out there much in the past year, anyway.

Thanks guys. This one was exciting to turn. Anthony, do you really think it would mess with the heads I am thinking of, or would they just nod and smile? ;)

Nice looking piece Bill, but it looks like the kind that could hurt your hand again.

Another fine piece of work Bill!
Adrenaline pumping from start to finish, no doubt

Cheers,
