Made this rattle for a friend's first grandchild. Maple and madrona, finished with beeswax and mineral oil. Conforms to CPSC choke-hazard standards by being larger than 1 11/16" in diameter. Overall length is 5.5". Filled with dried beans.

Looks good... Thanks for the safety info as well. We're expecting an addition to the family in September, and I've been thinking of making a few things.

John, that is a very nice piece - I like that Madrone. And, David, was that a stealth gloat over the "addition?" Don't mean to hijack John's thread, but congrats!

Just wanted to clarify something. I think you meant 1 11/16 in diameter, not circumference. 1 11/16 in circumference is about the size of a nickel.

looks very good. Good wood choice too.

I had a friend make a rattle with 3 free rings out of a single piece of Pacific Yew. It was very complex and looked great but he realized that yew is very poisonous! :eek: after he finished it but before he gave it to his daughter.
