In another thread, "Sommerfeld Drawer Lock Joint Bit", a poster asked for information about this bit. See:

Now, this 'got me ta thinkin' -- which is dangerous:eek:-- about the plastic set-up gauges sold by companies like Eagle America for similar bits, see:

The set-up blocks are relatively inexpensive -- US $9.99, but I have often wondered do they work? I realize that they are bit “specific” only to the manufacturer’s bit profile and probably do require some minor adjustment.

Seems like a good idea, but I ‘nevva’ really tried a lock miter bit. The only time I did, the set up process drove me crazy :(and I utilized another joint. And I do not know of anyone who tried or uses these set up blocks.

I get them whenever offered for bits that can be difficult to setup. Just this AM I made 4 drawers with a MLCS drawer lock bit. Setup, including cutting thru a ZCI fence was 15 minutes. It's important for these blocks to work; 1st time - every time.
After cutting a bunch of sides, it's really bad for morale when you cut the ends and they don't mate up!

I get them when available.
I also make my own from small hardwood blocks once I get the bit set up.
I also measure and note the height of the bit and the position of the fence if applicable.
I now use Drawer lock mitre and regular lock mitre without problems and
with quick setup from the measurements and the blocks.
Before I had blocks and measurements. It took me time to set up and test.

I think that they can save you much aggravation.
