I was looking at the Grizzly tool sharpener (http://www.grizzly.com/products/Universal-Knife-Grinder/G2790)for doing planer blades.

Does anyone have one of these or do their own planer blade sharpening?

I use the Tormek sharpening system, and they make a special jointer/planer blade attachment that does a great job.

I am also interested to find out how this works for anybody who owns it...I may be interested in one myself now that I have a planer and jointer that require blade sharpening.

I made a jig for my jointer blades, and use the scary sharp method. Works great. Since the blades on my planer are indexed, I am leery of using a sharpening method which might cause the width of the blades to be different. Since the replacement blades are not expensive, I just buy a new set when needed.

I have used Dynamic Saw in Buffalo for TS blades. They sharpen jointer and planer knives for $.50/inch. I might try them next time I need a set.

Fred, the Grizzly blade sharpener will work well for you if care is taken to mount the blade parallel to the axis of travel. The blade holding fixture tilts to set grind angle, and slides side-to-side in grooves to pass the knife over the wheel. The motor and grinding wheel raises to increase the depth of grind.

It doesn't take much to figure how many $.50 inches it would take to pay for itself. Not to mention, no turnaround time.

I've got the Makita sharpener, it looks similar to the Grizzly sharpener but it uses a waterstone. There are a few posts on the creek about the makita

So Chip, do you actually own and use one of these grinders?

Thanks

Fred - sorry for the slight hi-jack. If the makita is something you are interested in, I have one that I do not use - very little use, I had posted this in Classifieds some months ago - no response then. Forgot about it sitting in the way-back. $ negotiable. http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=121660&highlight=makita

Thanks for the offer Kent. But I have 20 in planer blades and the Makita only goes to 15 in whereas the Griz goes to 20 inches.

Honestly, No, Fred. I made my own blade grinder on the same principle. But the Grizzly does work! 20" blades may be a bit awkward. Care will have to be taken to keep the sliding carriage flat against its fixture at the extreme limit of travel.
