This DIY motorized one bucket cement mixer from the Popular Science archives (Aug 1954 page 202) http://www.popsci.com/archive-viewer?id=3SEDAAAAMBAJ&pg=202&query=cement+mixer is interesting. Has anyone seen modern variations on this design? Does it really work?

I don't see any reason why the mixer won't work. I have mixed concrete in small batches using a wheel barrow, shovel and a hoe. The mixer does not look very efficient if you are going to make a lot of batches.
I have a set of books from the 50's that show a lot of how to do and make things from things that they had on hand in the time period. I refer to them once in a while when I need some inspiration for some project I am involved in.

I like the roller skate at the top of the bucket.

Seems to me if you're going to build it, make it big enough to be worth the effort and big enough to replace the barrow/hoe method.

My speculation about a modern design would be that it would use a plastic 5 gal paint bucket without any permanent blades attached to the bucket. It would be able to use any random bucket that you happened to have handy. That would imply having some sort of drop-in blades or having a fixed blade that swung down into the bucket.

The companies who make those plastic one-bag cement mixers that you roll along the ground should augment their product line by adding a motorized stand like the one in the article. I'd rather mix concrete in a tub than bend over and roll something along the ground.
