A neighbor recently took down a very large maple.
Luckily, he knows Cheri and I do woodturning and asked us if we wanted some.
The main trunk is almost 4ft in diameter!
Lots of good wood, but unfortunately a lot of very punk crumbly wood.
Here is a pic to enjoy!

Jeff, your description is accurate - that is one very large maple tree!! Hope you have a good chainsaw.;)

Hope it nets you some good wood.

Those big ole maples almost always have some soft spots. But looks like you will still have plenty to turn. Always great to come upon some FREE wood.

Nice big Silver Maple Jeff, and it doesn't look to punky from where I'm standing, that's nice wood to turn, I'd cut out the big crotch pieces with all the curly wood first, have fun and take care ;-))

Thanks!
I will put the new McNaughton to good use!
By the way, we have a lot of "feral" guard cats around, you may get rubbed on...lol
I have sealed up the logs I am going to cut this week.
Unfortunately, some of the branch off trunks had the bark peeling off for a couple years so they are fairly dry rotted, I can easily stick a fingernail in them.
I will probably ask Dean, the owner for some help cutting and moving.
He is starting an excavating company (lucky for Cheri and I) and has all the equipment needed, trencher for digging out stumps, Bobcat, JLG Lift, and a variety of chainsaws with long bars.
I just have a small 20" Poulan that I use for everything, going strong for 5 years!
Lots of cutting in store for this week.
